Bright note for the industry

Despite the gloom and economic uncertainty of 2008, the restaurants market has a solid base for future growth through the coming year, according to an industry intelligence provider.

The country’s eateries will continue to benefit from a characteristic that is unique to the British – a willingness to experiment not only with new food and drink, but also with whole concepts of eating out.

This was the the highlight of a market report from Key Note cautiously forecasting no growth in the market this year, but it will be resumed from 2009.

The report stated that the inflation rate on food is even forcing restaurants to change menus and ingredients, with the higher costs being hardest to bear for the UK’s many independent restaurants.

To back its forecast, Key Note quoted the British Hospitality Association saying: “High food prices are certainly affecting the industry with most caterers trying to change menus to reflect this.”
